Much like the recent storm hit the northwest the night before, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil win for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This outcome represented back-to-back Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the top team with their title hopes in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capability to balance league and European soccer with a limited roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they earned a place in the European competition. Looking at the calendar, it always felt like this was the week that would seriously challenge this capability. Unfortunately for the opposition, they looked tired throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to make changes with a several changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added energy, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such loading issues. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from injury.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to gather for Skinner and his side from the first whistle. This was a show of the quality from Manchester City whose dynamic forward line played with and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime initial 45 minutes display that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts completely dominant and had Manchester United all at sea. Prior to this match, United had let in just few in this WSL season but they collapsed in the face of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Initial Opportunities

The early indicators came early when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Hemp was at the center of everything early on, exploiting the space left by Riviere down United’s right side. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

United had multiple forays ahead, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the wings but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. City, in the meantime, controlled the ball, teasing their rivals and trying to lure them of their organization.

Triple Strike

They made their pressure count with almost the first period played when Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was City’s seventh header of the term.

They extended their cushion with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the center from the back, the field opened up for City. The prominent Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the right before sending a precise low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third after a quick shift in possession saw Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The primary change came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to change the course of the match. Former City player Jess Park came most likely to score, striking the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to produce a one shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their lead when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to overcome any side who finished above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a strong position after nine matches.
