A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
